Discovering Oregon: A 4-Day Journey Through Nature's Wonderland

Oregon, a state known for its diverse landscapes and breathtaking natural beauty, offers an unforgettable adventure for those willing to explore. From towering waterfalls and serene lakes to rugged coastlines and volcanic craters, this 4-day itinerary takes you through some of Oregon's most iconic and picturesque spots.

Day 1: The Scenic Wonders of Portland and Beyond

**Morning:**

We being our Oregon adventure in Portland, a city brimming with charm and surrounded by natural beauty. After a hearty breakfast, we drove to Multnomah Falls, the tallest waterfall in Oregon. The sight of water cascading down 620 feet is a mesmerizing start to our trip.
There is a reservation required to visit the waterfall from May 24th 2024 through September 2nd 2024, so make sure you get one online from recreation.gov

    

**Mid-Morning:**

We continued our journey to Trillium Lake, a tranquil spot offering stunning reflections of Mount Hood. It's the perfect place for a peaceful walk or a photo session.


    

 

**Afternoon:**

We embarked on the scenic Mount Hood drive, where we were treated to panoramic views of Oregon's highest peak. Later, we visited Little Zigzag Falls, a hidden gem offering a short, serene hike to a beautiful waterfall.



**Evening:**

We concluded our day with a visit to Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach. This iconic monolith, rising 235 feet from the shoreline, is especially magical at sunset. After soaking in the views, we headed over to our hotel in Newport.




Day 2: Coastal Charms from Newport to Whaleshead Beach

**Morning:**

We departed early in the morning for our first stop of the day - Yaquina Head Lighthouse, a historic beacon offering panoramic views of the rugged coastline. Exploring the tide pools at its base for a glimpse of marine life was a lifetime experience. Truly magical and unique. We saw urchins, mussels, sea stars, anemones and small fishes.



        

  


**Mid-Morning:**

Next, we headed south to Thor's Well, a natural sinkhole that appears to drain the ocean. It's a spectacular sight, especially during high tide with water shooting high in the air. We continued our drive to Arch Rock and the Natural Bridges Viewpoint, where dramatic rock formations and crashing waves create a stunning landscape.







                 


**Afternoon:**

Our next stop was Thomas Creek Bridge Viewpoint, the highest bridge in Oregon, offering breathtaking views of the forested canyon below. We finished your coastal adventure at Whaleshead Beach, known for its striking sea stacks, picturesque and untouched shoreline and some peaceful time with nature and birds.





**Evening:**

After soaking in the beautiful views at Whaleshead Beach, we headed towards your hotel in Shady Cove.


Day 3: From Majestic Waterfalls to Crater Lake's Splendor

**Morning:**

Day 3, we started our exploration of southern Oregon. Our first stop was Toketee Falls, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the state. The two-tiered falls cascade into a pristine pool, surrounded by basalt columns. The hike is 0.8 miles roundtrip.


**Afternoon:**

Next, we visited Crater Lake National Park, home to the deepest lake in the United States. When we visited the lake, it still had significant amount of snow. On climbing to the top, the vivid blue waters of Crater Lake, formed in the caldera of an ancient volcano, was a sight to behold. During summer times (July – Sep), you can take the Rim Drive for breathtaking viewpoints, or hike down to Cleetwood Cove for a closer look.






**Evening:**

After taking in the breathtaking views of this natural wonder, we headed towards your hotel in Bend.

Day 4: The Beauty of Bend and the Painted Hills

**Morning:**

We started our day with a visit to Tumalo Falls, where a short hike to the viewpoint rewards you with views of a spectacular 97-foot waterfall. A step hike to the top of the falls gives you a breathtaking display of this magnificent fall.


**Mid-Morning:**

The area around bend is known for beautiful cascade mountain ranges and lakes.
We headed to Pilot Butte to soak into panoramic views of the cascade mountains.
Later, we visited Elk lake to have stunning mountain views of South Sister and Mt. Bachelor.

**Afternoon:**

We continued your journey to the Painted Hills, part of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. These colorful, striated hills offer a unique and otherworldly landscape, perfect for exploration and photography.


 


**Evening:**

We started our trip back to Portland International Airport, to take our fight to New Jersey.

Tips from our experience and learning
1. If you are planning to cover the main attractions listed above, 4 days are enough, but if want to explore deep and cover more hidden gems, go for alteast a week. Oregon is very beautiful and there is a lot to explore.
2. Pacific coast is stunning and mesmerizing, but at the same time the ocean is also quite aggressive, so make sure to get into the water only when its safe.
3. Best time to visit Crater Lake National Park is from July-Sep when all roads around the rim are open.
4. If you are planning to visit the high desert area of Oregon during summer time, carry a lot of water, as temperatures can soar up easily.
5. While exploring the coastal region and Crater Lake, carry few warm clothes, as it might get windy and a bit chilly even during Summer times.
6. If you are visiting Crater Lake during Spring or Winter times, make sure to be carry chains for your car wheels. The average snowfall is 48 feet.
7. If you have a drone, Oregon is your place to use it.
8. Oregon is called state of waterfalls, so if you love photography, do carry the ND filter for your camera lens.
