🌊Our First Island Escape: A Family Getaway to Martha’s Vineyard

Explorer Lens

📍 Arrival: Setting Sail for Something Special

There’s a magical feeling about visiting an island for the first time. This summer, I had the joy of experiencing it with my wife, our little daughter, and my mom on the serene, storybook-like Martha’s Vineyard.

🚢 We boarded the Hy-Line Cruises ferry from Hyannis, MA, the ocean breeze in our hair and anticipation in our hearts. The Vineyard—with its charm, calm, and coastal soul—awaited.

🎨 Oak Bluffs: Color, Whimsy, and Sweet Surprises

Our Vineyard journey began in Oak Bluffs, a town bursting with personality and color. Right away, we were charmed by the Gingerbread Cottages, a dreamy collection of pastel-hued Victorian homes that looked straight out of a fairytale.

We strolled through the whimsical Campground neighborhood, where my daughter twirled joyfully between candy-colored homes and my mom admired the intricate woodwork and history.

And of course, no visit here is complete without:

🍩 Back Door Donuts – Their warm apple fritters, eaten under the stars, were the definition of a perfect vacation treat.

🛏️ Where to Stay

Pequot Hotel – Cozy, colorful, and just steps from all of Oak Bluffs’ attractions.

🏘️ Edgartown: Sophisticated, Seaside, and Soothing

Next, we visited Edgartown, a graceful harbor town filled with white colonial homes, cobblestone streets, and bobbing sailboats.

At South Beach, golden sands and rhythmic waves offered a peaceful escape. My daughter dashed in and out of the surf while my mom enjoyed the calm under a wide, blue sky.

🍽️ Where to Eat in Edgartown

The Newes From America Pub – Rustic and hearty, with delicious seafood chowder.

Among the Flowers Café – A charming garden café perfect for breakfast al fresco.

🛏️ Where to Stay

Harbor View Hotel – Elegant and iconic, with stunning views of the Edgartown Lighthouse.

🌅 Aquinnah Cliffs: Earth’s Masterpiece

Our most awe-inspiring stop was the Aquinnah Cliffs, where bands of red, white, and clay-colored earth rise dramatically above the Atlantic.

A short walk brought us to the Gay Head Lighthouse, a striking sentinel of the coast. The view was humbling—nature at its most expressive. My mom stood silently, taking in the majesty of the moment.

🐟 Hidden Bites & Local Flavors

🦞 Larsen’s Fish Market (Menemsha)

A humble gem where seafood comes straight off the boat. We savored buttery lobster rolls while boats bobbed just yards away.

🍦 Mad Martha’s Ice Cream (Multiple Locations)

Try the Vineyard Fudge—rich, nostalgic, and made for slow summer evenings.

💙 Reflections: Family, Ocean, and Timeless Moments

This trip wasn’t just about the places—it was about shared laughter, sandy toes, and peaceful sunset glances. From the charm of Oak Bluffs to the cliffs of Aquinnah, Martha’s Vineyard gifted us a mosaic of memories we’ll hold forever.

We arrived as first-timers.

We left as lifelong fans.
